This is riveting drama, even in my second read-through. You didn't shy away from the depth of what they'd all be feeling, and definitely left me feeling that everything would be okay. Well done. :)

We all do that. :) I've written things that I saw as humor and later as I go through on the next draft have realized that in fact, it was kind of tragic or cruel, and done a complete 180. Then someone will tell me their take on it and I'll go "huh I never thought of that either."
I wasn't going to say anything but it just kept bugging me, picturing Mark being raised as part of a team and a "family" and then being out in exile, wondering what exactly he was fighting for in the first place. My reaction says as much about me as it does the story, I'm sure!

I wasn't thinking of Jason 'driving him off' at all... more that Mark chose this voluntarily because he didn't want to be in close quarters as they were spending their lives together. It';'s been a long time since i wrote this, but I don't think I was viewing this as you see it at all. Not to say that your view isn't valid, only that it's something that never occurred to me...

While I really like most of this story (I've read it more than once now because of that), the end bugs me. Jason's so jealous that he would drive their best friend off to another planet? Frankly in this one I think Mark is the bigger man by far in the end. If Jason's relationship with Princess is so weak that he can't tolerate their best friend staying there, well, they're in trouble. And frankly he's a pretty crappy friend for letting Mark isolate himself from everyone he loves just so Jason doesn't have to deal with petty jealousy.
But usually when I'm that annoyed with something, it means the author created a complex, believable story and characters. ;)

This ending certainly suits your take on BOTP. :)
I don't have much of a problem with the end of the first Gatch series. Joe's whole first series character arc was driving toward his own destruction, and there was no way for Ken to know if he'd need all of the others with him or not in order to save the world. Joe's not leaving them a message about where he was going so they could at least follow put him in that situation (which honestly I found a bit surprising, I'd think he'd want them to follow).
Another part that made me roll my eyes a little was Jun's selfishness at preventing Ken from climbing in. Certainly I understood the sentiment, but I thought it made her look weak, demanding that the whole world be allowed to die when it could have possibly been saved. I was particularly surprised that Ken did as she wished. Being so duty-minded, I'd have expected otherwise, or for him to decide that he was 100% sure climbing in would accomplish nothing.
The great thing is that the show is complex enough to inspire such debates, dicussions, and AU's! Congrats on finishing up. :)

Thanks, Chris. All true, but what really got my goat was more than those two themes: it was the team taking off without turning over every rock to look for Joe. I can understand everything else...but THAT... As for Jun...that scene brings wonder of the same thing at first, but in retrospect it could also be read that it's the moment where she, all of them, had finally given up. They'd just been forced to leave their gunner to bleed to death; they are seconds from their own with no plausible way to stop the black hole device; and suddenly she's faced with the prospect of watching Ken get himself ground into hamburger. An ugly end coming just got uglier, so she's dragging him back for one last moment of peace before the lights go out. Just my impression. :-)
