I read this long ago and just read it again. Its such a sad story and I can relate to the mixed feelings they were both experiencing. It became a 'damned if you do it, damned if you don't' problem. It'll take Joe a long time to get over it.

I genuinely hadn't read this one before. How wonderfully conflicting and powerful. An impossible position for both Joe and his cousin. I'm sure Ken didn't take that decision lightly, either, watching all of the subtle cues to decide how this was going to fall out and seeing how close the cousin was to shooting Joe ... and being all too aware that this was Galactor country and this guy knew Joe's face.

A lot of complications could follow this story. Now the family knows that the child wasn't killed, after all. It's that realization late in the first series that causes Katse to start the hunt for the Condor in civilian identity. Very interesting stuff. :)

It would have been a lot harder for Joe, I think, if that family wasn't so obviously and matter-of-factly Galactor.
